Where to Stay at Lake Baringo in 2026: Lodges Still Open

Deciding where to stay at Lake Baringo is harder than it used to be. The lake has risen steadily since 2010, and several of its best-known hotels have closed, flooded or now run with half their rooms under water. Most websites still list them as if nothing has changed. We take guests to Lake Baringo every season for our Lake Baringo boat ride and longer Rift Valley trips, so this guide covers only the places that are operating in 2026, what each one costs, and which to avoid for now.

Why Lake Baringo Hotels Have Changed

Lake Baringo is one of only two freshwater lakes in Kenya’s Rift Valley, and its surface area has roughly doubled since 2010. In 2026 it came within a few kilometres of Lake Bogoria, and the government has announced a dyke to keep the two lakes apart, as reported by the Daily Nation.

The lodges built right on the water’s edge took the hardest hit. That is why the places on our list either sit on high ground, stand on an island well above the water, or are set back from the shore. For visitors the good news is that the wildlife has not gone anywhere: hippos, crocodiles and more than 470 bird species are as easy to see from a boat as ever.

The Best Lodges at Lake Baringo in 2026

1. Tumbili Cliff Lodge: our top pick

Tumbili sits on a low cliff about 10 metres above the western shore, which is exactly why it has stayed dry while lodges around it flooded. It is small, with six thatched cottages built from local stone and timber, each with an outdoor shower, and there is a good swimming pool and even a telescope for stargazing. Recent guests describe large rooms, lake views and friendly staff.

  • Price: About USD 355 a night for two, or USD 260 for one, on full board in the high season, dropping to about USD 305 and USD 225 in the quieter months. Drinks are extra.
  • Why we like it: It is a short drive from the Kampi ya Samaki jetty, so you can be on the water for a sunrise boat ride with no rush.
  • Good to know: With only six cottages it fills up from July to October and over the holidays, so book early.

2. Island Camp Baringo: best for a special occasion

Island Camp stands on a hill on Ol Kokwe, the largest island in the lake, and the only way in is by boat. There are 16 lake-view rooms and tents, from classic tents up to superior rooms with their own splash pools, plus a main swimming pool and a pool bar looking over the water. Activities include boat trips, kayaking, visits to the Il Chamus (Njemps) community on the island, and excursions to Lake Bogoria.

  • Price: Roughly USD 250 to 500 per person sharing, depending on room type and season.
  • Why we like it: Waking up on an island with fish eagles calling is hard to beat, and the boat transfer is a mini safari in itself.
  • Good to know: Everything runs on boat time, so it suits a two-night stay better than a quick stopover.

3. Samatian Island: best for families and groups

Samatian is a small private island about 20 minutes by boat from the western shore. It has five thatched rooms, including two family units, and is set up mainly for self-catering, with bedding, firewood, charcoal and two kayaks included. A chef and full catering can be arranged for groups.

  • Price: A 2025 report put it at about USD 45 per person per night on a self-catering basis. Some agents quote much higher for fully catered or exclusive stays, so ask us for the current rate for your group.
  • Why we like it: Having an entire island to your group is unforgettable, and guests rate it very highly.
  • Good to know: Bring your own food unless you arrange catering, and plan the boat transfer in daylight.

4. Lake Bogoria Spa Resort: best for Baringo plus Bogoria

About 45 minutes south of Baringo and just 2 km from the Lake Bogoria gate, this large resort has 115 rooms and cottages and a pool fed by natural warm springs. It is the obvious base if the flamingos at Bogoria are as important to you as the boat ride at Baringo.

  • Price: From about USD 270 a night for two on bed and breakfast, rising to about USD 320 from July to October.
  • Read next: Our Lake Bogoria entrance fees guide explains the gate fees and what you can still see after the floods.

Budget Places to Stay Near Lake Baringo

If you are self-driving or travelling on a tight budget, there are simple guesthouses and small resorts in Kampi ya Samaki, the village by the jetty, and in Marigat town about 20 km south.

  • Kampi ya Samaki: Small resorts such as Sandai Resort sit across the main road from the lake, from roughly USD 70 to 100 a night. They are basic and more popular with local conferences than safari travellers, but you are minutes from the boats.
  • Marigat: Guesthouses and small hotels from about USD 40 to 50 a night. Good for a cheap overnight between Baringo and Bogoria.

Whichever you choose, book your boat with a registered operator rather than at the roadside. TripAdvisor reviewers regularly warn about being overcharged at the jetty, which is why our Lake Baringo boat ride has a fixed USD 80 per boat price agreed before you travel.

Lake Baringo Hotels to Check Before You Book

Some names still appear on booking sites even though conditions have changed a lot. Get written confirmation of what is working before you pay a deposit for any of these.

  • Soi Safari Lodge: Still taking guests, but a guest review from March 2026 reports that the ground floor is under water, only some upper rooms are usable and food and service are limited. We are not booking it for now.
  • Roberts’ Camp: A Baringo favourite for decades, badly hit by the floods. It now mainly serves as the boat pickup point for Samatian Island.
  • Lake Baringo Club: Closed when the water rose and the operator moved its bookings to its Lake Naivasha property. Check before booking any listing using this name.

We will always tell you honestly if a lodge is not up to standard. That is part of what you get when you book with a local operator.

Which Side of the Lake Should You Stay On?

Where to stay at Lake Baringo depends mostly on what you want from the trip.

  • Western shore (Kampi ya Samaki): Best for boat rides and birding. You are close to the jetty and the cliffs where Verreaux’s eagles and Hemprich’s hornbills nest. Tumbili and the budget options are here.
  • On an island: Best for atmosphere and privacy. Island Camp and Samatian put you in the middle of the lake, with hippos and fish eagles right outside.
  • Towards Bogoria and Marigat: Best if you want to see both lakes. The Spa Resort and Marigat guesthouses work well as a base for a two-lake trip.

Things to Do From Your Lodge

  • Lake Baringo boat ride: Three hours with hippos, crocodiles and the famous fish eagle catch, from USD 80 per boat.
  • Lake Bogoria: Flamingos and steaming springs 45 minutes south, with a USD 50 non-resident entry fee.
  • Birding walks: More than 470 species recorded, with the cliffs behind Kampi ya Samaki among the best spots. October to April adds migrant birds, as our best time for a Kenya safari guide explains.
  • Rothschild’s giraffes: The Ruko Community Conservancy on the eastern shore protects giraffes that were moved to the mainland from a shrinking island in the lake. Ask us about including a visit.
  • Il Chamus culture: Visit a fishing community on Ol Kokwe Island with a local guide.

How Many Nights Do You Need?

One night is enough for a sunrise boat ride before you move on. Two nights lets you add Lake Bogoria, a birding walk and an afternoon by the pool without rushing. Baringo also sits on the classic northern route: our Tandala Safari spends time here before continuing to Samburu for the Samburu Special Five, and heading south to Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara.

Getting to Lake Baringo

Lake Baringo is about 285 km from Nairobi, a drive of 4.5 to 5 hours on the A104 through Nakuru and Marigat to Kampi ya Samaki. From Lake Nakuru it is 2 to 2.5 hours. For help comparing the southern lakes on the way, see Lake Nakuru vs Lake Naivasha, and for a full budget breakdown see our Kenya safari cost guide.
