Best Time to Visit Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons (June–October and December–March). During these months, the vegetation is thinner and wildlife gathers around the Ewaso Nyiro River, making game viewing easier and more rewarding.

June – October (Dry Season):
Ideal for safaris. Animals are concentrated near water sources, and the chances of spotting the Samburu Special Five—Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and gerenuk—are very high. Days are warm and sunny, with minimal rainfall.
November & April – May (Wet Seasons):
The reserve becomes lush and green, offering dramatic landscapes and fewer crowds. Birdwatching is excellent during this time, as migratory species arrive. However, heavy rains may make some roads less accessible.

Recommendation: For first-time safari-goers and wildlife photographers, the dry season is the most rewarding. For travelers seeking fewer crowds and scenic beauty, the green season offers a peaceful and more affordable experience.
