Deciding where to stay at Lake Baringo is harder than it used to be. The lake has risen steadily since 2010, and several of its best-known hotels have closed, flooded or now run with half their rooms under water. Most websites still list them as if nothing has changed. We take guests to Lake Baringo every season for our Lake Baringo boat ride and longer Rift Valley trips, so this guide covers only the places that are operating in 2026, what each one costs, and which to avoid for now.

Lake Baringo is one of only two freshwater lakes in Kenya’s Rift Valley, and its surface area has roughly doubled since 2010. In 2026 it came within a few kilometres of Lake Bogoria, and the government has announced a dyke to keep the two lakes apart, as reported by the Daily Nation.
The lodges built right on the water’s edge took the hardest hit. That is why the places on our list either sit on high ground, stand on an island well above the water, or are set back from the shore. For visitors the good news is that the wildlife has not gone anywhere: hippos, crocodiles and more than 470 bird species are as easy to see from a boat as ever.
Tumbili sits on a low cliff about 10 metres above the western shore, which is exactly why it has stayed dry while lodges around it flooded. It is small, with six thatched cottages built from local stone and timber, each with an outdoor shower, and there is a good swimming pool and even a telescope for stargazing. Recent guests describe large rooms, lake views and friendly staff.
Island Camp stands on a hill on Ol Kokwe, the largest island in the lake, and the only way in is by boat. There are 16 lake-view rooms and tents, from classic tents up to superior rooms with their own splash pools, plus a main swimming pool and a pool bar looking over the water. Activities include boat trips, kayaking, visits to the Il Chamus (Njemps) community on the island, and excursions to Lake Bogoria.
Samatian is a small private island about 20 minutes by boat from the western shore. It has five thatched rooms, including two family units, and is set up mainly for self-catering, with bedding, firewood, charcoal and two kayaks included. A chef and full catering can be arranged for groups.
About 45 minutes south of Baringo and just 2 km from the Lake Bogoria gate, this large resort has 115 rooms and cottages and a pool fed by natural warm springs. It is the obvious base if the flamingos at Bogoria are as important to you as the boat ride at Baringo.
If you are self-driving or travelling on a tight budget, there are simple guesthouses and small resorts in Kampi ya Samaki, the village by the jetty, and in Marigat town about 20 km south.
Whichever you choose, book your boat with a registered operator rather than at the roadside. TripAdvisor reviewers regularly warn about being overcharged at the jetty, which is why our Lake Baringo boat ride has a fixed USD 80 per boat price agreed before you travel.
Some names still appear on booking sites even though conditions have changed a lot. Get written confirmation of what is working before you pay a deposit for any of these.
We will always tell you honestly if a lodge is not up to standard. That is part of what you get when you book with a local operator.
Where to stay at Lake Baringo depends mostly on what you want from the trip.
One night is enough for a sunrise boat ride before you move on. Two nights lets you add Lake Bogoria, a birding walk and an afternoon by the pool without rushing. Baringo also sits on the classic northern route: our Tandala Safari spends time here before continuing to Samburu for the Samburu Special Five, and heading south to Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara.
Lake Baringo is about 285 km from Nairobi, a drive of 4.5 to 5 hours on the A104 through Nakuru and Marigat to Kampi ya Samaki. From Lake Nakuru it is 2 to 2.5 hours. For help comparing the southern lakes on the way, see Lake Nakuru vs Lake Naivasha, and for a full budget breakdown see our Kenya safari cost guide.
Tumbili Cliff Lodge is our top pick in 2026. It sits above the flood line on the western shore, close to the boat jetty, with six cottages and a pool. Island Camp is the best choice for a special island stay.
Some are. Lodges on the shoreline, including Soi Safari Lodge, Roberts’ Camp and the former Lake Baringo Club, have been badly affected. Tumbili Cliff Lodge, Island Camp and Samatian Island sit higher and are operating normally.
Expect about USD 305 to 355 for two on full board at Tumbili Cliff Lodge, USD 250 to 500 per person at Island Camp, and from about USD 40 a night at budget guesthouses in Marigat.
Yes. Samatian Island offers self-catering from about USD 45 per person, and guesthouses in Kampi ya Samaki and Marigat start at roughly USD 40 to 70 a night.
Yes. Bogoria is about 45 minutes’ drive south. Most guests take a sunrise boat ride on Baringo, then drive to Bogoria for the flamingos in the late morning.
Two nights is ideal: enough for a boat ride, a birding walk and a trip to Lake Bogoria. One night works if you are passing through on the way to Samburu.
