A Lake Baringo boat ride is the best way to see this freshwater lake in Kenya’s Rift Valley up close. In three hours on the water you pass hippo pods, crocodiles basking on the rocks and fish eagles diving for their catch, with the Tugen Hills rising behind you. We run guided rides from Kampi ya Samaki at a fixed price of USD 80 per boat, and you can pair one with a stay at Lake Baringo or a longer Rift Valley trip such as our Tandala Safari, which stops at the lake on the way to Samburu. Planning a full trip? Our Kenya safari cost guide shows what park fees and lodges add up to, and Magical Kenya, the national tourism board, is a useful second source for planning.

Lake Baringo is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley, so its wildlife is very different from the soda lakes further south.
Keen birders can ask for a longer, birding-focused Lake Baringo boat tour with a specialist guide.
A typical three-hour trip follows this route, adjusted on the day for wind, wildlife and water levels.
Want to see Rothschild’s giraffes too? Add a guided walk on Ruko Conservancy’s giraffe island. Just ask when you book.
Rides run all year. For how the seasons compare across Kenya’s parks, see our guide to the best time for a Kenya safari.
Lake Baringo is about 285 km from Nairobi, a drive of 4.5 to 5 hours. Take the A104 through Nakuru, continue to Marigat, then follow the road north to Kampi ya Samaki. From Nakuru the drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours, so it pairs naturally with a visit to Lake Nakuru.
For a sunrise ride, stay the night before at a lodge or camp near the lake. We can book your stay, transport and boat together, so all you need to do is turn up at the jetty.
Lake Baringo has risen steadily since 2010, and its surface area has roughly doubled. In 2026 it made national news as it edged to within a few kilometres of neighbouring Lake Bogoria, and the government has announced plans for a dyke to keep the two lakes apart, as reported by the Daily Nation.
For visitors, boat rides continue as normal, and the hippos, crocodiles and birds are as easy to see as ever. You will notice flooded acacia trees and some submerged buildings along the shore, a striking sight from the water. We check conditions before every trip and will tell you in advance if any stop needs to change.
Every guest wears a life jacket, and every ride starts with a short safety briefing. Our boat guides know the lake well: where the hippos rest, how close is safe, and when wind makes it better to stay near the shore.
With higher water, hippos and crocodiles now come closer to the shoreline than before, so we keep a respectful distance at all times and never let guests swim. Children are welcome with an adult. See moments from past trips in our gallery.
Lake Baringo sits on the classic Rift Valley and northern Kenya route, so it is easy to add to a longer trip.
Our Tandala Safari already combines Lake Baringo, Samburu, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara in one itinerary, or browse all our safaris.
Our guided boat ride costs USD 80 per boat for three hours and takes up to seven people, so a full boat works out to about USD 11 each. The price is fixed and agreed before you travel.
Three hours. That is enough time to see hippos and crocodiles, watch a fish eagle take its catch, and stop at Gibraltar and Ol Kokwe islands.
We run a sunrise ride at 6:00am and an afternoon ride at 4:00pm. Sunrise is best for birds and hippos, while the afternoon ride ends with the sunset.
Yes, with an experienced operator. Everyone wears a life jacket, and our guides keep a safe distance from hippos and crocodiles, which now come closer to the shore than before.
Yes. Take the sunrise ride, have breakfast, then drive about 25 km south to Lake Bogoria for the hot springs and flamingos.
We recommend it, especially from July to October and over holidays. Booking ahead fixes your price and guarantees your boat and guide.
Send us your date, preferred departure time and group size, and we will confirm your boat, guide and fixed USD 80 price within the day.
